About Us

Welcome to the Shipston-on-Stour Probus

A warm welcome to all retired or semi-retired gentlemen who are interested in meeting like-minded people, and would enjoy the stimulation of listening to guest speakers giving varied, well informed, and entertaining talks, followed by lively and interactive discussion and an excellent, satisfying lunch, with drinks from the open bar.

We meet fortnightly, on a Friday, at 10.00am for a 10.30 start, upstairs at the Shipston Sports and Social Club, at 21 London Road, Shipston-on-Stour, CV36 4EP.

The usual format for our meetings is: coffee, followed by our speaker, then informal drinks at the bar, and  a substantial cooked, two-course, lunch.

We also hold a number of gatherings each year at interesting venues where wives/partners and many other family friends can be invited.  Additionally, we also have a number of “Ladies Day” meetings each year where wives/partners are invited to join us to listen to one of our guest speakers, and enjoy the discussions and lunch afterwards.

Please feel free to come along for one or two free visits as a guest, or please contact any one of us to find out more. Go to OFFICERS: for contact details.

GOOD NEWS! After many years of trying, we now have stairlifts on the stairs leading up to the meeting room. This will be a great benefit to all those members who have struggled with the stairs in the past and, hopefully, will make it much easier for them to enjoy our meetings.

We have just launched a monthly newsletter, presenting all the latest news, forthcoming events, and reviews of the previous month’s speakers. As an important part of this, we are looking to members to provide details of any experiences or local services that they think might be of interest and use to others – anything at all, in fact that they feel would be relevant. The newsletter is being published in a physical format to give to members at our meetings, and also by email to those who are unable to attend. The hope is that those who are unable to enjoy the benefits of attending our meetings will at least feel that they are being kept informed of what is going on. The second issue is available now.

Our last meeting, on 31st March, included a lively and very enjoyable talk by Dr Katy Bellamy who has a series of talks about the brain and memory. This one was called “Fun Facts about the Brain” A full review of this talk will appear in the ‘Latest’ section of this site.

Our next meeting:

Friday 14th April, 2023, 10.00am for 10.30am start, at the Shipston Sports and Social Club. A regular meeting, with coffee, followed by an hours’ talk by a guest speaker, drinks at the bar, and then a very good two-course cooked lunch. All welcome.

Due to rapidly increasing costs, we are asking all members and prospective members to let Paul Kelly know by the Tuesday before each meeting (at the very latest) if they know they are unable to come, or if they will not be staying for lunch, so we can give the caterers a more accurate idea of the probable attendance. This is to enable the caterers to budget more accurately, to keep costs down, and therefore to keep their charges to us down.
